On a ship, oil works right next to the water: in the stern tube, propeller hub and deck hydraulics. Water gets into the system, and oil from leaks reaches the sea — which is why EAL oils are used.
Oil leaking into the sea
All three series are biodegradable and meet the US EPA 2013 VGP guidelines for EAL oils. SHC Aware Hydraulic also has the EU Ecolabel.
Seawater in the stern tube
SHC Aware ST emulsifies with seawater and forms a stable emulsion that keeps lubricating and adheres to surfaces.
Rust and corrosion
SHC Aware ST protects against rust in the presence of seawater, and its film resists washout. SHC Aware Gear protects gears and bearings from rust.
Air and cavitation
SHC Aware Gear releases air better than typical mineral gear oils, which protects against cavitation.
Pump and gear wear
SHC Aware Hydraulic and SHC Aware Gear are high load-carrying anti-wear oils, stable over a wide temperature range.

An EAL is an environmentally acceptable lubricant: biodegradable and minimally toxic. It is used where oil contacts water. All three series on this page meet the US EPA 2013 VGP guidelines for EAL oils.
The manufacturer states that SHC Aware ST is compatible with most typical mineral stern tube oils and common elastomers. Check the seal manufacturer’s recommendations before switching — we will help you plan it.
SHC Aware Hydraulic 32: the manufacturer designs it for cranes, winches, ramps and hatches, and for engine room machinery. It is biodegradable, has the EU Ecolabel and meets VGP.
