How much engine oil? check quantity and level

Check oil quantity in the manual for your engine version. The Mobil selector helps identify suitable oil and available vehicle data.

In short

The manual for your engine version gives the exact quantity. The selector and a workshop can help identify vehicle data. Check “Pojemność” (capacity) in the selector where data is available for your car.

  • When topping up, add small amounts.
  • Check the level between MIN and MAX, following the manual.

Check the Mobil selector

The selector recommends oil and, for some vehicles, provides capacity and drain intervals. Compare every result with your vehicle’s manual.

  1. Owner’s manual

In the technical data, check the quantity, specification and viscosity for your engine version.

  2. Mobil selector: search by VIN

Check the identified vehicle version. “Pojemność” (capacity) appears where data is available.

  3. Workshop

For modifications or unusual engines, confirm oil quantity with a workshop.

Check the level and top up

Follow the manual when checking the oil level. Top up with oil specified by the manual, checking the level after small additions.

Check the level

  1. Park on level ground

    Choose a flat surface.

  2. Switch off and wait

Allow oil to drain into the sump for the time specified in the manual.

  3. Remove the dipstick

    Wipe it clean.

  4. Insert it fully

    Then pull it out again.

  5. Read the markings

The correct level should be between MIN and MAX.

  6. No dipstick?

Use the electronic oil level indicator according to the vehicle’s manual.

Top up

  1. Choose the correct product

The oil must meet the specification and viscosity grade in your vehicle’s manual.

  2. Add small amounts

Wait and check the level again. If you have not drained the oil, do not add the full oil-change quantity.

  3. Check the result

After an oil change, check the level after starting and stopping the engine, allowing the specified waiting time. Do not exceed MAX.

  4. Replace the filler cap

Tighten it when you have finished topping up.

Oil level outside the range

A reading outside the MIN–MAX range requires action according to the manual. Confirm it under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.

RiskDo not assume it is safe to keep driving with a low level. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.Excess oil also needs attention. It is not a reserve for future mileage.
What to doFollow the manual. For an oil pressure warning, follow the manufacturer’s emergency procedure.Ask a workshop how to remove the excess. Do not add more oil, and check the instructions.

How to assess oil consumption

Assess oil consumption against the manufacturer’s limit for your engine version. Check the manual or ask a workshop, identifying the exact engine.

Record the mileage and the amount of every top-up. This helps you compare consumption over time and gives your mechanic useful information.

Oil-change intervals

When to change engine oil

Check mileage and time limits in the vehicle manual and service book. The Mobil selector may show an interval under “OCI” where vehicle data is available.

Long Life requires manufacturer approval and oil meeting the specified standard. “Synthetic” on the container does not establish a service interval.

If the manual specifies a shorter interval for your driving conditions, follow that schedule.

5W-30 or 5W-40?

  • Choose an SAE grade and specification approved by the engine manufacturer.
  • Similar labels do not make 5W-30 and 5W-40 interchangeable.
  • Change grades only within the options allowed by your vehicle’s manual.

Ask for oil selection advice

Provide the engine version and manual requirements. Our specialist will help choose an oil and reply with a specific product recommendation.

Radosław Piękny

“Spec from the manual first, viscosity second. Tell me the model and year of your car, and I will point you to the right oil.”

We will read the model and engine from the plate or the registration document.

Frequently asked questions

  • The manufacturer specifies the quantity for the engine version and the type of oil change. Check the manual, then follow its procedure to check the level after filling. A figure labelled “system capacity” is not necessarily the amount to add.

  • It depends on the engine version and code. Search by VIN in the selector and compare the data with the manual.

  • We do not publish a single table because the same model can have different engines. Use the VIN search in the selector to identify the version.

  • Follow the manual: park on level ground, wait as instructed, then wipe and reinsert the dipstick before reading it. For electronic measurement, follow the manufacturer’s procedure.

  • Confirm the reading using the procedure in the manual. Ask a workshop how to remove the excess and what to do before driving further.

  • Compare consumption with the manufacturer’s limit for your engine. If consumption is increasing, consult a workshop.

  • The vehicle manual and service book set the timing. Also check the selector’s “OCI” field where data is available. Do not use mileage recommendations for a different model.

  • Use a grade only if the engine manufacturer allows it. Compare the specification as well as viscosity in our engine oil range.

  • Check the machine or engine manual for the oil quantity and type; if the data is missing, ask an adviser. Mobil Delvac Legend for older diesel engines is listed in our truck and machinery engine oil range.
